Bounding quantile demand functions using revealed preference inequalities

چکیده
This paper develops a new approach to the estimation of consumer demand models with unobserved heterogeneity subject to revealed preference inequality restrictions. Particular attention is given to nonseparable heterogeneity. The inequality restrictions are used to identify bounds on counterfactual demand. A nonparametric estimator for these bounds is developed and asymptotic properties are derived. An empirical application using data from the UK Family Expenditure Survey illustrates the usefulness of the methods. © 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Best nonparametric bounds on demand responses
This paper uses revealed preference inequalities to provide the tightest possible (best) nonparametric bounds on predicted consumer responses to price changes using consumer-level data over a finite set of relative price changes. These responses are allowed to vary nonparametrically across the income distribution. This is achieved by combining the theory of revealed preference with the semipara...

متن کاملOn concentration of self-bounding functions
We prove some new concentration inequalities for self-bounding functions using the entropy method. As an application, we recover Talagrand’s convex distance inequality. The new Bernstein-like inequalities for self-bounding functions are derived thanks to a careful analysis of the so-called Herbst argument. The latter involves comparison results between solutions of differential inequalities tha...
متن کاملDo Rational Demand Functions Differ from Irrational Ones? Evidence from an Induced Budget Experiment
Various studies (e.g., Becker, 1962, Ariely et al., 2003) have noted anomalies concerning the relationship between observed demand and the preferences presumed to motivate it. We reexamine these findings using experimental choice data. After separating our subjects’ choices into rational and irrational subsets based on consistency with the axioms of revealed preference, we estimate and compare ...
متن کاملHermite-Hadamard Type Inequalities for MφA-Convex Functions
This article deals with the different classes of convexity and generalizations. Firstly, we reveal the new generalization of the definition of convexity that can reduce many order of convexity. We have showed features of algebra for this new convex function. Then after we have constituted Hermite-Hadamard type inequalities for this class of functions. Finally the identity has been revealed for ...
